Dr. Jan Akervall

Dr. Jan Akervall completed his training at the University Hospital in Lund, Sweden, obtaining both MD and PhD degrees. He then completed fellowship training in Head and Neck Cancer reconstruction at the University of Michigan. While practicing in Sweden, Dr. Akervall directed the management of Head and Neck cancer in the southern half of his country.

At Beaumont Hospital, he developed a practice in the entire breadth of ENT, specializing in Head and Neck Cancer. He also developed a unique entity called “the Biobank,” a large tissue bank, and protocols for evaluating the causes, detection, and treatment of both early and advanced cancers.

Over the past decade, Dr. Akervall has developed minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laser microsurgery and robotic surgery, for head and neck cancers. He is the Medical Director for Multi-Disciplinary Head and Neck cancer clinics at Beaumont Royal Oak and St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor. He is a professor of otolaryngology at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. He has published 40 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has six patents. Since 2012, Castle Connolly has ranked Dr. Akervallin in the top 1 percent of ENT physicians in the USA. He was recently acknowledged by Newsweek and named Top Doctor by HOUR Magazine in Detroit.
